The Law School Democrats of America met with the principals of the Obama Lawyers Committee, Steven Newmark (Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe, LLP) and Douglas W. Dunham  (Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom, LLP), to discuss how law students can help the re-election campaign.

The Obama Lawyers Committee is an organization founded from one of the 2008 presidential campaign’s most successful programs, the Young Lawyers for Obama (YLFO). With Mr. Newmark as its national coordinator, YLFO had over 9,500 lawyer members spread over 55 chapters in 46 states.  In addition to lawyers in the government and non-profit industries, nearly 80% of the Committee's membership works in the private sector; the majority are between 25 and 40 years old and include law students as well as associates and junior partners from large law firms such as Latham & Watkins, Jones Day, Cadwalader, and Cravath.

Both Mr. Newark and Mr. Dunham, a leading member of the Obama’s national finance committee in 2008, were instrumental in supporting the Obama campaign through fundraising and community outreach.  Their organizing led to contributions totaling over $4 million to then-Senator Obama’s 2008 campaign.  They also helped organize over 600 trips to various states to assist in voter protection and field efforts.

Our members will work with the Committee to help create, organize and update fundraising lists for the Committee and later make calls to firm-specific lists.  Each participating law student will be the point person for one firm, and be given the opportunity to develop a relationship with the firm’s Democratic attorney contributors over the lifespan of the campaign.
